This week marks a year since Shed opened its doors down at Cutlery Works. Since we served our first bowl, we’ve come a long way and learned invaluable lessons that we plan to take forward. With that in mind, let’s take a look at back our journey so far.
Before opening our site in November last year, plans were already underway. Over the summer 2018, our close-knit team headed to festivals in the region. You might have spotted the self-confessed plant pushers at Tramlines in Sheffield and Eroica in Buxton. The experience gave the team a chance to test out exciting recipes.
While many of you guys came to try our healthful offering, we also saw some familiar faces too. The former Sheffield Lord Mayor, Magid Magid, headed over to our teepee to check out some of our tasty eats. It didn’t end there. Mr Motivator himself joined the plant pushers at the tent to give the team a quick workout.
Shed Test Cafe @ Cutlery Works
Towards the end of the summer, we began to plan the next phase of the Shed journey — a test cafe in the trendy Kelham Island area of the city. We teamed up with the Milestone Group and decided on a location in the new Cutlery Works development.
After months of hard work, planning and preparation, it was time to finally open the doors to the people of Sheffield. In November last year, we launched the Shed test cafe and were thrilled to see so many of you coming to try out our food.
The test cafe gave the team a chance to try out a variety of plant-based recipes. From cashew nut cheese fondue to our exciting carrot dawgs, our talented chefs worked hard to put a fun and interesting twist on each and every recipe.
Open breakfast, lunch, and dinner, we served a whole host of meals to the good people of Sheffield. Sunday brunch was always a busy affair, with locals heading down to the cafe to feast on oats, loaded toasts and organic coffee.
Introducing… the Shed Vending Experience
While the cafe environment was bustling, the team worked hard on a project in the background. We already had our sights set on a new way to deliver food to the city. Our Shed vending experience brought a smarter way to get healthy food on the go.
After ending our test cafe pilot, we were ready to move onto the next feat. Over summer 2019, we launched our Shed vending machine in prime locations around the city; Westfield Health, NHS hospitals and Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.
The new-age machines allowed us to stock freshly made Shed food (as well as some healthy third-party products!) around the clock. From protein-packed salad bowls to wholesome snacks, our team worked hard to create a new version of fast food.
Throughout this pilot period, the team learned that Sheffield has a hunger for healthy, affordable food on the go. The smart vending machines were a huge success, allowing locals to get nourishing snacks and meals when they needed it the most. We’re thrilled by the response from customers and would like to say thank you for your ongoing support throughout this process.
The Next Step for Shed
Now that the pilot phase is complete, the Shed team is moving on to the next phase in their journey. The central kitchen, Shed HQ, and the team is on the hunt for a brand new permanent premises in the heart of Sheffield. During this time, we will be going into a hibernation period, while we plan the next step.
What’s more, you can still get healthful food from one of our vending machines. We’ve teamed up with Planet Organic and other third-party vendors to bring you nourishing snacks. Our third-party offering includes nutritionally-balanced snacks, drinks, and more, available from the city centre location.
The flagship smart vending machine, located at Ponds Forge, will be regularly stocked with third-party products over the course of our hibernation. Thank you so much for following our journey so far. Watch this space.
