Every year, more than 300,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed in the UK, according to Cancer Research stats. While there’s no exact science when it comes to the issue of cancer prevention, leading a healthier lifestyle could be a step in the right direction. The plant-based diet cancer prevention trend is just what it says on the tin. More and more people are trying to lower their risk of getting the condition by eating well.

While there’s a lot of hype out there, we’re going to focus on the facts. There are numerous blog posts online making claims such as ‘eating a plant-based diet cured my cancer” and the like. We’re not going to comment on whether these are valid or otherwise. It’s important to understand that the scientific research here is somewhat limited. What we do know is that the plant-based diet improves your health and wellness, which in turn could prevent cancer.

We already know that what you eat affects your health. Advice from the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center suggests that adapting your diet could help to reduce your risk of many types of cancer. The article defines a plant-based diet as one that focuses “minimally processed foods of plant origin including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes.” The experts state that these foods could have cancer prevention benefits.

For example, eating less than 30g of whole grain foods each day could reduce your risk of getting colorectal cancer by around 21%. With that in mind, trying a plant-based diet cancer prevention treatment could help you to protect your health. The same report suggests focussing on certain food groups, including legumes, beans, and whole grains in a bid to lower your overall risk in the future.    

Plant-Based Diet and Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer to hit British men, according to stats. Should doctors be prescribing a plant-based diet for cancer patients? It’s a simple enough question but, currently, there’s not a lot of research in the area. One of the most enlightening pieces of research here surrounds the plant-based diet and prostate cancer.

The study into the adoption of a plant-based diet by people with recurrent prostate cancer returned some positive results. Participants who started eating plant-based foods showed lower disease progression than those in the control group. The researchers concluded that the plant-based diet cancer treatment could have ‘therapeutic potential in the management of this condition’. However, more research is needed in this area for the theory to be proved. 

Healthful Plant-Based Diets for Cancer Survivors

According to a recent report from the American Cancer Society cancer survivors should follow a ‘prudent diet’ after their treatment. That is essentially a plant-based diet which is rich in grains, fruit and vegetables. The diet should also be low in things like red meat, processed food and sugars. Since the typical Western diet has historically been high in these particular products, cutting back on all of the above (or cutting them out) is one of the smartest ways to protect your future health.

One thing is for certain: eating well and living an active lifestyle is the best way to look after your health. Choosing to consume a plant-based diet and cut out potentially harmful foods is one of the greatest moves you can make.
